What is Spyware?
How did spyware get on my computer?
What is Spyware: Spyware is an executable
software program that you have inadvertently downloaded to
your computer. We use the word inadvertently because you
probably did request the spyware download- you just didn't
know that you had..
Your download request was probably for some
type of freeware or shareware product. This could have been
another program that you needed or even a wallpaper graphic.
When the download warning came up on your screen you hit
"next" instead of reading the warning. We have
become immune to seeing these warning since we see them so
often.
Even if you did read the warning you probably
would not have understood the legal or technical jargon that
download warning was giving you. The spyware program should
have been present in that warning.
Spyware is an invasion of your privacy. The
spyware program is running in the background gathering
information from your web browser. What it is trying to do in
the best of circumstance is gather intelligence on the
computer user. It will then sell this information to the
highest bidder.
The information gathered focuses on the types
and names of websites that you visit. However if used maliciously
the spyware can check your cookies and transfer that
information to the "home" system as well. Some
spyware programs can even record you keystrokes.
